Jewel Boxes

I've needed a solution for organizing my jewelry for awhile. When I lived alone, it was more easily justified to leave it all over the top of my dresser, hung on the wall, and in an overflowing jewelry box. But in the effort to keep our new place as gender-neutral as possible, the need to organize all my sparklies became more of a priority.

So I started searching for a solid fix - it's actually more challenging than you might think! Functional jewelry storage needs to be able to hold hoop earrings as well as studs; bangles and necklaces of all sizes; watches; rings, and more - and still look clean and organized. I think a great idea is using a picture frame with wire (as seen here), but it didn't meet all my needs and didn't really fit the aesthetic I was going for.

So in the end, I settled on actual tabletop jewelry display cases (the kind a vendor or business might use) from Michael's, jazzed them up with gold (surprised?) and added brackets on the back to hang them. To create more of an "area," I also picked up a small hanging mirror (also from Michael's), and spray painted a few old frames to match. Finally, I repurposed my beloved bar cart as a catch-all for anything that I couldn't display in the boxes, and added an earring holder from Container Store for my hoops.

In the end, the whole project cost only $35 since I already had so many of the supplies on-hand, and I'm really happy with the end result... which isn't exactly "gender neutral" but hey, it's the year 2014 - who says sparkles can't be masculine?

Supplies: Jewelry display cases, gold leaf, gold leaf adhesive, a brush, brackets for hanging the cases, any old frames you have, and gold spray paint

To apply the gold leaf: First apply thin layer of adhesive to all surfaces you want to cover. Wait until it dries clear, then apply the leaf and rub off any excess with a foam brush or soft bristle brush.

I finished the first box (as pictured above) using the gold leaf flakes, but it was pretty time consuming (2+ hours.) For the second box I used gold leaf sheets which cut the time in half. Still, the gold leaf flakes came in handy for filling in any tiny holes the sheets missed.

Spray paint the frames all to match. Don't be afraid to use different types or shapes of frames - the mutual color will bring them together to make it feel like a collection. (Notice my favorite gold spray paint, Design Master's "Gold Medal.")

The final product! Before hanging, I first laid all the pieces out on the bed to find a configuration I liked.
