I've needed a solution for organizing my jewelry for awhile. When I lived alone, it was more easily justified to leave it all over the top of my dresser, hung on the wall, and in an overflowing jewelry box. But in the effort to keep our new place as gender-neutral as possible, the need to organize all my sparklies became more of a priority.
So I started searching for a solid fix - it's actually more challenging than you might think! Functional jewelry storage needs to be able to hold hoop earrings as well as studs; bangles and necklaces of all sizes; watches; rings, and more - and still look clean and organized. I think a great idea is using a picture frame with wire (as seen here), but it didn't meet all my needs and didn't really fit the aesthetic I was going for.
So in the end, I settled on actual tabletop jewelry display cases (the kind a vendor or business might use) from Michael's, jazzed them up with gold (surprised?) and added brackets on the back to hang them. To create more of an "area," I also picked up a small hanging mirror (also from Michael's), and spray painted a few old frames to match. Finally, I repurposed my beloved bar cart as a catch-all for anything that I couldn't display in the boxes, and added an earring holder from Container Store for my hoops.
In the end, the whole project cost only $35 since I already had so many of the supplies on-hand, and I'm really happy with the end result... which isn't exactly "gender neutral" but hey, it's the year 2014 - who says sparkles can't be masculine?
